Stadiums and Arenas
Johannesburg Stadium

Date 1995
Location Johannesburg Gauteng RSA
In collaboration with Nel Wilreker

The Johannesburg Stadium, Ellis Park Precinct, Gauteng, is designed to make a beautiful and bold modern statement. The project was completed at a furious pace to open in time for the African Games as South Africa held its first democratic elections.
The landscape architecture components were designed in conjunction with Nel Wilreker Architects, and specifically under Hans Wilreker. A large part of the precinct design was concerned with crowd control, access and egress, safety and providing an urban canopy. To the latter point, London Plain trees were used all around the stadium, bought to already be of substantial girth in 1994.
The structures in the landscape is post-modernist and has an African fantasy feel to it. It is important to remember that this was the era of Sol Kerzner and Sun City/ Lost City. The same roped up, gum-polled dome aesthetic permeates the kiosks and structures, be it only suggestive. Large concrete bollards provide vehicle control in the pedestrian zones.

Location : Beijing, PR China

The Olympic Green is an Olympic Park in Chaoyang District, Beijing, China constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Since then, the streets around the park have been used for an exhibition street race of the FIA GT1 World Championship in 2011, after a race at Goldenport Park Circuit in the vicinity. It will again serve as an Olympic Park when Beijing hosts the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The Beijing National Stadium is the centerpiece of this project. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, athletics, and football finals of the Games. The stadium has room for 91,000 spectators, but the capacity was reduced to 80,000 after the Olympics.[citation needed] It will be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
We have, in a series of EDAW workshops contributed to the brief and configuration of the landscape around the stadiums, and the Olympic Green in general.

Ayyappa Hindu Temple

Date 1995
Location Pretoria Gauteng RSA
In collaboration with KWP

In the middle 90’s a local Pretoria doctor was leading a flock of Southern Indian Hindu faithful in congregation, and dreamt of building an Ayyappa Hindu Temple. Dr Kollapan contacted Mr Fourie who studied Southern Hindu Temples with Indian colleges at Mcgill University in Canada. Mr. Fourie in conjunction with KWP Architects did a masterplan on the shore of the Hennopsrivier in Erasmia. The masterplan consisted of a cricket oval for community activities, the Temple and it’s out buildings, and some ablution and residential facilities. The craftsman for the Gopuram and the statues of Deities were all done by Southern Indian craftsman brought to Pretoria for the purpose. The site has undergone multiple periods of growth as more structures are added. The original Gopuram is one of two in Pretoria- with the second one in Marabastad.

Morningside Church

Date 1995
Location Sandton Gauteng RSA
In collaboration with Nel Wilreker

The Morningside Church in Morningside, Sandton, Gauteng, is designed in the missionary church building tradition. The architecture and landscape architecture components were designed in conjunction with Nel Wilreker Architects. It has a traditional cross layout, with the corners of the isles and transoms as well as the fenestrations being reinforced with stone, and the rest of the façade plastered and painted. The stone pilasters are GRC cladding. The roof has a 45-degree pitch in line with this typology, and the roof material is slate. You are welcomed to the church grounds with a timber porte-cochere and two staircases leading down to the level of the main building. The site is located on a prominent street corner in Morningside, and the softscape and the building orientation is set up to maximize views from the corner. The Plane trees around the church add to the European charm of the church grounds.
